Gum Disease in Dogs
There are several ways that you are going to be able to avoid gum disease in dogs.
Exams
The first way is to make sure that your dog is getting an oral exam and cleaning on a regular basis. Most time, this is going to be done under general anesthesia so that the doctor can make sure they are going to be able to get a full picture of what might be happening inside of the dog's mouth. They are also going to be able to look at all of their teeth and what is happening below the gum line.
Brushing
The second way is to make sure that you brush the teeth of the dog on a regular basis. This is one of the best ways to ensure that your dog's teeth that are always going to be in the best shape. It is important to remember that this is going to be a very daunting task for you and the dog. Therefore, you are going to need to have a lot of patients, the right tools for your dog, and a little bit of guidance from your veterinarian on what you are going to need to do to make sure that your dog's teeth are as healthy as possible. In fact, it is a good idea to take it slow, so that the dog is going to be more willing to let you brush their teeth. This is even going to be true in your senior pets especially if they have a lot of trust in you.
Food
The third way is to make sure that your dog is only eating the best quality of dog food. There are a lot of dogs that are going to benefit from a dental diet. This means that they are going to be eating dog food that is going to scrub their teeth as they are chewing the food. Plus the dog food is going to have a lot of additives inside of it that is going to help to prevent the plaque on their teeth from hardening. It is a good idea to talk to your vet to see what is going to be the best diet for your dog and their needs.
Treats
The fourth way is to make sure that you give your dog toys and treats that will be safe for them to chew on a regular basis. When the dog is chewing on their toys on a regular basis, then it is a great way to help the dogs to prevent the dog from having gum disease. This means that the treats and toys do not need to be hard. It is going to be better for them to have rubber balls. thin strips of rawhide that are going to bend, and toys made of rubber that you will be able to hide the treats inside of. It is very important that you do not give the dog a hard type of rawhide because it is cause a lot of problems in their gastrointestinal area if the dog happens to swallow a large piece of the rawhide. The hard treats like animal bones, cow hooves, pig hooves, and nylon bones are going to cause the dog to have broken teeth or fractures in their permanent teeth.
